Cabo/Magdalena Bay/La Paz Feb-Mar 2013
We flew into Cabo and then drove about 6 hours north to Magdalena Bay, the southernmost lagoon where grey whales end their annual migration. In the calm waters of the bay, the females give birth and then nurture their calves until they are strong enough to make the long journey back to Alaska. Dozens of adult whales 'guard' the entrance to the bay, where a lot of mating activity occurs daily! Our boat captain didn't speak much English, but when we saw a lot of splashing and rolling around in the water, he said, "Making babies!" in perfect English. Our next stop was La Paz and we explored some of the gorgeous gulf beaches in that area. Balandra Bay is one of my favorite beaches in the world with its turquoise shallow waters. The highlight of this part of the trip was a day boat trip out to Isla Espiritu Santo - an incredibly beautiful island just off of La Paz with a dramatic seismic history. We finished up the trip at Cerritos, back on the Pacific side of Baja, where the surf was fun. A film crew for Globe Clothing was there shooting a short movie for the X Games with Aussie pro surfer, Dion Agius, so that was fun to watch. The house cat at the Cerritos Surf Colony had recently given birth to a litter of 5 adorable kittens so they became my favorite subjects to photograph.
